An insight to Kaumarabhritya:

Kaumarabhritya refers to the branch of Ayurveda which deals with nourishment, support, maintenance and treating the diseases of infancy, childhood and adolescence and their treatment. 

It also mentions the quality of wet nurse, causes of vitiation of breast milk and their treatment. Kumara is the term described for infants and children. Therefore Kaumarabhritya, which is also a synonym of Bala chikitsa, means the treatment of children.

Uniqueness of Kaumarabhritya:

• Children cannot explain their complaints
• The dosage of medicine is different from others
• The medicine given must be palatable to them

Due to these factors, treatment of diseases in children is done in different manner. Hence a separate branch is devoted for them.

Department of Kaumarabhritya seeks to provide excellent theoretical, clinical & practical education with a view to shape efficient physicians and researchers in the field of Kaumarabhritya, who are intellectual, morally upright and socially sensitive.

• To promote the immunity of children by practicing swarnaprashana and other related programmes.
• Conduct medical camps and awareness programmes to impart the knowledge and facilities in child care to the society.
• To provide OP and IP treatment for various childhood illnesses taking care of drug dose, drug forms, nutrition and panchakarma procedures.
